Remote Work Tax: California vs Texas远程工作税务:加州 vs 得州

Two of the most popular remote-relocation choices in America — and they tax you in almost opposite ways. Side-by-side comparison for 2026.

The single biggest difference: California taxes your wages (top bracket above 10%), Texas does not tax wages at all. If you are a remote worker choosing where to live, the tax delta between the two can be worth tens of thousands of dollars a year. But California compensates with more worker protections (paid sick leave, SDI, Cal WARN), while Texas leans heavily on at-will employment. Neither state applies the convenience rule — that particular double-tax trap lives in the Northeast.

Who wins as a remote worker?

Moving from California to Texas to keep a remote job is the classic tax play: you keep the salary, drop the state income tax, and Texas has no convenience rule. The catch is that California is aggressive about auditing former residents — document your move (voter registration, driver's license, bills) and time it cleanly. Moving from Texas to California does the opposite: you add a state tax bill. Working remotely while staying put in California for a Texas employer simply means California taxes you — the employer's home state is irrelevant to that bill.

Important caveat

Salary bands for the same remote job often differ by where you live — California employers sometimes pay a "location adjustment" when employees leave the state. And RTO mandates can end your remote arrangement unilaterally: California employers generally may require in-office days, too.

失业机构EDD(兼营州残障保险)得州劳动力委员会

Is remote work cheaper in Texas or California?
On state income tax alone, Texas wins decisively — no state wage tax vs California's top bracket above 10%. But compare cost of living, housing and salary bands before deciding. Model the numbers with the Tax Gap Estimator and a CPA.
Do I owe California tax if I move to Texas but keep my California job?
If you genuinely move and become a Texas resident, California generally taxes you as a part-year resident until the move is complete; after that, wages for work performed outside California should not be California-sourced. California audits former residents closely — document the move.
Can my California employer force me back to the office after I move?
Usually yes. California remains an at-will state and may require in-office attendance as a condition of employment, which ends a cross-state remote arrangement. Check your written offer and remember the ADA interactive-process duty for medical needs.
What if I live in California and work remotely for a Texas company?
California taxes your wages because the work is performed in California (source income); the Texas employer may need to register to withhold California tax. Texas will not tax you. Residence, not the employer's location, drives the bill.
